Morning Zazen Reflection Across the World

Here is a haiku on morning zazen. I offer this to you:

Frigid morning run

Warm muscles kneaded, stretched soft

Today, I sit centered

After a sudden transition, from NC to Taiwan, I hope to sit with you all again in your morning, my night.

Music by Pete Estabrook

Trumpet Artist Instructor Alexander Technique

After attending Buddha's Birthday Celebration at SMZC with his father while in high school, Pete eventually began practicing Zazen at age 20. He formally met Kowng-roshi (for dokusan) at a retreat in Cambridge, MA in 1986. While attending college in Boston, Pete practiced regularly at the Cambridge Zen Center. Throughout his life, regular practice and an interest in Zen was encouraged and fueled by his father who introduced Pete to Zen practice as well as Suzuki-roshi's and Dogen Zenji's writings through a series of treasured hand-written letters. Pete has been a regular member of SMZC since 2017.

Pete has a BA in Music from Berklee College of Music, a Master of Fine Arts Degree in Jazz Studies from California Institute of the Arts, and is certified to teach by the Northern California Center for the Alexander Technique and American Society for the Alexander Technique. He has been an adjunct at Santa Rosa Junior College for 25 years and has served on the faculty at Sonoma State University, Napa Valley College, and Pacific Union College. Pete has worked for Carnival, Princess, and Holland America Cruise lines, appeared on 7 albums by various San Francisco Bay Artists in a variety of genres and served as the Racetrack Bugler on the Northern California Horse Racing Circuit for 34 years. He released his own solo debut Jazz album Reflections Vol. 1in 2020.
