About Shuso

Mitchell travelled from the east coast to the west after finishing college to be a student at San Francisco Zen Center in 1977. He was a resident at the city center and later at Green Gulch Farm until 1987. After returning to school to complete graduate studies at UC Berkeley in 1990, he established a career as a fluvial geomorphologist restoring rivers throughout California. Mitchell met Kwong-roshi in 2008 and received jukai a year later. He currently resides with his wife in Sonoma Valley at the foot of Sonoma Mountain.

We are hosting an informal get-together for Sonoma Mountain Zen Center's sangha members, families and friends. This is an opportunity to connect, give feedback and hear about Nyoze's upcoming Shinsanshiki (Mountain Seat Ceremony) on Septermber 2. Discussion about what's needed to prepare and Q&A about Shinsanshiki. Engagement, help and support from the sangha is crucial for this monumental event to be successful this fall.

Special Evening Dharma Talk by Rev. Hoitsu Suzuki-roshi

Join us for Special Guest Teacher talk by Hoitsu Suzuki-roshi. Zoomed from Rinso-in in Japan. Translated by Rev. Gyokei Yokoyama, Kokusai Fukyoshi (International Missionary) of Sozenji Buddhist Temple, Montebello, California. Hoitsu Suzuki-roshi is the Dharma heir of his late father, Shunryu Suzuki-roshi, and held the position of tanto and godo at Eiheiji, the head of Soto Zen training monastery. He has been the abbot of Rinso-in temple in Yaizu City, Shizuoka, Japan since 1966. After his father’s death, he gave Dharma transmission to Jakusho Kwong-roshi in 1978. Hoitsu currently resides at Rinso-in with his wife Chitose.
