Dharma talk will be given by Nyoze Kwong, Vice Abbot & Executive Director of SMZC, following 10:30-11:00 am zazen. Open to the public.

 

 

About the Speaker

Nyoze Kwong received a degree in Anthropology from UC Santa Cruz. He worked as a fundraiser in Stanford University’s Engineering Department. Nyoze has a background in Socially Engaged Buddhism and has trained with well-respected teachers in Japan and United States and has over 30 years of meditation experience. In 2012 he finished his formal Zen training at Eiheiji, oldest monastery and head temple of the Soto Zen School in Japan. In 2015 he was certified and recognized by Sotoshu as a Zen teacher in the lineage of Shunryu Suzuki-roshi. Currently Nyoze serves as Vice Abbot (the head of meditation practice) and Executive Director of Sonoma Mountain Zen Center (SMZC). He will become the new abbot of SMZC during Shinsanshiki (Mountain Seat Ceremony) on September 2, 2023. He lives at SMZC with his wife Kashin and his son Ejo.

About Instructor: Senior Student of Kwong-roshi & Ordained Priest

Jundo began formally practicing Zen at Sonoma Mountain Zen Center where he lived as a student since 2005. During his residency until 2020, he held the position of Kansui (Administrator), Shissui (Work Leader), and Tenzo (Head Cook). Jundo received Jukai from Jakusho Kwong-roshi in 2005 and was ordained as a priest in 2015. He also served as Shuso (Head Student) leading the 30 day intensive practice period in the winter of 2015. Before coming to Genjo-ji, he worked as a baker and then a machinist for several companies in the North Bay. Jundo is an avid golfer and enjoys playing and practicing whenever he gets the chance. He now lives in Petaluma, CA.

NEXT FRIDAY: Kids Community Overnight

Join us for a delightful campout under the stars starting on Friday afternoon. We'll begin with setting up tents and informal vegetarian dinner. After an orientation in the zendo, we'll have a short zazen and service, ending the night with s'mores roast out under the stars. Saturday morning includes kids friendly program: another short zazen and service, followed by buffet breakfast. Then head out and hike together to Rinpoche’s Stupa. Optional Saturday Community Talk is included afterwards.

Register by Tuesday, May 16: $20 admission/person (Please book per family--parent(s) and kids together. For example, enter 2 qty for 1 parent and 1 child.)

 

What to Bring: Tent, pillows, sleeping bags, and blankets

Attire: Dress in layers; bring plenty of warm clothes for warmth and comfort.
