The Beauty of Everyday Things

with Kashin Julie Kwong

How do we relate to our everyday world? To the things we see right in front of us? With the things we hold right where we are standing? Where is beauty found? What is it exactly that we are waking up too when we relate? These are some of the questions we will try to investigate. If you have some questions of your own, about the beauty of everyday things, join us and let’s talk.

Online Zazen Reflection The impact of the pandemic over the last 16 months presented difficult challenges for everyone in one way or another, not to mention the suffering worldwide. At the same time, because it required adapting to the new radical circumstances, the pandemic offered the opportunity to look at our practice in new and different ways.

Zazen online, as it developed at SMZC, offered the wonderful alternative of practice with our SMZC sangha and has continued connection to our teacher(s)—from anywhere in the world. It also provides an option for those who have physical limitations that not only restrict the ability to sit “on the mountain” but to practice in general. During the pandemic I personally took a journey with a herniated disc in my back that brought extreme pain and serious physical limitations during the time of rehabilitation. Zazen online gave me stability, an anchor for finding alternative ways to sit and continuing practice during the pandemic restrictions, as well as a time daily to “sit with” all the challenges.

It has been invaluable; and now that we are moving beyond the pandemic restrictions, the decision to continue online zazen from the Zendo on Sonoma Mountain is a gift for the Maha Sangha and anyone who cannot get to the mountain. I am sure online zazen will go through changes as we move forward, but clearly it is here to stay and that is truly meaningful.
