About Speaker

Jakusho Kwong-roshi is the founder of Sonoma Mountain Zen Center - Genjoji temple, authorized by the Sotoshu in Japan. He is a successor of the late Shunryu Suzuki-roshi’s lineage. Kwong-roshi travelled and taught throughout America and Asia as well as Poland and Iceland where Zen practice places have been established. Also he has deep connections with the Theravadin, Shambhala/Drala Mountain Center, Rinzaiji, Soen-Korean Zen with Christian Carmelite and Benedictine traditons. He had the good karma to meet all the great Asian teachers who came West. His publications include Mind Sky: Zen Teaching on Living and Dying, No Beginning, No End: The Intimate Heart of Zen, and Breath Sweeps Mind.

In December 2024, Kwong-roshi was honored to receive the Dharma Cloud rakusu from Daihi Gengo Akiba-roshi, Director of Sotoshu of North America.

Homage to the 90 year old Tathagata/Buddha

We take refuge as the Protector of the Dharma,

Benefactor of Humanity, Accumulator of Virtue.

May we all together remember the Buddhas of the Thousand Billion Worlds,

That we may maintain Peace & Harmony in this World.

Roshi reads this everyday and digests it slowly to feel its steep/deep underlying meaning to share…..

THIS SUNDAY: Buddha's Birth Ceremony

Families, friends and children will gather in the zendo to commemorate the birth of Shakyamuni Buddha in a Flower Festival and the traditional pouring of sweet rain over the baby Buddha. Following this ceremony will be an outdoor reception. Everyone is asked to bring flowers to offer in the zendo and to bring finger-type hors d'oeuvres, ready-to-serve on platters for the reception. Our entire Sangha will be the host of this event. Ceremony: 1pm / Outdoor Reception: 2-4pm

By RSVP: Open to the public. Please bring flowers and finger foods to celebrate.

NEXT FRIDAY: April Fusatsu Ceremony

Be present for & experience the Fusatsu At-one-ment Ceremony

Atonement Ceremony is a Buddhadharma training—blessing from the teacher and a ritual of chanting, bowing, purification, and renewal of vows/direction. Traditionally practiced on the full moon, Fusatsu is one of the most beautiful and profound ceremonies in the Zen tradition. Together, we acknowledge our karmic entanglements and hindrances, at-one for the beginningless greed, anger, and ignorance—restoring harmony and happiness.

7:30–8:00pm Zazen / 8:00–9:00pm Ceremony
