Study Group Reflections

I study and practice Buddhism at Sonoma Mountain Zen Center because I have the opportunity to continue to explore the fundamental teachings of Buddhism and build a foundation for daily practice through discussion.

Tuesday night study group has been such a helpful support for my practice. I feel especially grateful for the online programming that has happened through SMZC during the pandemic. Studying the same book together as a group has brought my dharma study to a whole new level. I especially appreciate Roshi, Nyoze and Kashin's commentary as well as the contributions from all the students as we proceed through each section. They are often able to offer context, both from an historical and practice-realization perspective, that I would completely miss if I were studying on my own. It is often so that the teachers who wrote these books, and the translators, are known personally to Roshi, or at least known of. It is really helpful to understand the position of these teachers in the lineage, and a little bit about their lives, to further understand and appreciate their contribution to the continuation of dharma teaching.

Drop-in welcome by donation

I have found that the questioning and sharing in the book study have deepened as the study has progressed and we have all gotten to know each other a little bit, at least from a dharma perspective. I appreciate the comfort level in the group around speaking out with questions and insights. I feel like it is deepening my own practice but also deepening my appreciation of sangha as we proceed together.

Morning Zazen Reflection

As bright moon fades

into morning sunrise glow,

waking chimes sweep away lingering dream dust.

I rise and opening Buddha's robe...

I step inside.
