Week 2: Buddhist Thought /// Drop-in Welcome ///

Introduction to Buddhist thought, beginning with Eihei Dogen, the monk who founded the Soto Zen lineage in 1247, Japan. We will talk about the principles of no self in Mahayana philosophy. Learn the origins of Buddha’s noble truths: life is suffering, all things are impermanent, and liberation is possible for all beings.

This workshop will be taught by

Kaian (海安) John Jennings and

Genzen (現前) Ed Cadman.

Zoom Zazen Reflection

As someone who no longer belongs on the road at night, I truly appreciate morning and evening Zoom zazen with members and friends of SMZC. In the morning I watch my busy little mind trying to lure me into old memories and events. —Doesn’t it ever need a rest?!

Then, as I start on my morning walk, everything becomes quiet. The petty concerns have disappeared, and I can fully appreciate the sounds and sights of the ever-changing scenery of Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter. After a busy day, my half hour of zazen again quiets my mind before I retire to bed.

When I walk, my mind goes

in a million directions.

Now I walk in peace

with each step I create a warm breeze.

With each step a lotus blooms.
